To develop and co-ordinate the necessary studies and projects to facilitate decisions on the planning, construction, financing, supply and operation of a high-speed rail network to be created in mainland Portugal and its connection with a similar Spanish network.
The main objectives of the High-speed Rail Network in Portugal are:
- To reinforce Portugal’s integration into the Iberian Peninsula and Europe;
- To accelerate Portugal’s economic and technological development, including at a regional level, fomenting the creation of employment;
- To promote a modern, sustainable and efficient transport system;
- To expand mobility and increase the competitiveness of the port, airport and logistics systems;
- To contribute towards a more balanced distribution of modes of transport for passengers and goods, changing the current hegemony of road transport;
- To develop an Atlantic system that will provide a competitive axis on a European scale.
